A aide long awaited. From this Tuesday, August 1, the family allowance fund (CAF) will begin to pay the back-to-school allowance (ARS), an aid allowing low-income households to pay for part of their children’s school supplies.

Awarded under several conditions, the ARS benefits approximately 3 million families, or nearly 5 million children.

Conditioned on household resources, the ARS is intended for parents with children aged 6 to 18, who are educated in a public or private establishment, in apprenticeship or cared for in a specialized reception establishment. It aims to partially finance the costs related to the start of the school year, such as supplies, equipment and clothing.

Parents wishing to educate their child themselves at home cannot receive the ARS, unless the child is registered for correspondence courses – via the Cned for example.

The first payments are made from August 1 for families residing in Reunion and Mayotte, with the start of the school year taking place respectively on August 17 and 23 in these territories.

From August 16 in mainland France

For the other overseas departments and those of France, the ARS will be paid from August 16, i.e. 19 days before the Back to School. To be eligible for this aid, household income must not exceed a certain threshold.

For a dependent child, N-2 income must not exceed 25,775 euros per year. With two dependent children, they must remain below 31,723 euros, while for households with three dependent children, they must not exceed 37,671 euros. Finally, you must have an income of less than 43,619 euros for households with four dependent children. For each additional child, you must add 5,948 euros.

If household resources slightly exceed the ceilings, “a differential back-to-school allowance may be paid”, specifies the website of the family allowance fund.

This year, the aid has been increased by 5.6% compared to that paid in the summer of 2022. It now amounts to 398.09 euros for children aged 6 to 10, 420.05 euros for those aged 11 to 14 and 434.61 euros for teenagers aged 15 to 18.
