After 11 consecutive months of increases, Brazil finally recorded a drop in the number of defaulters in December last year. According to Serasa’s Delinquency and Debt Renegotiation Map, 69.4 million Brazilians were in default in the last month of 2022.

Despite still being considered high, the number represents a drop of 405 thousand people compared to that recorded in November (69.83 million) of the same year.

The value of all debts together exceeded BRL 312 billion in December. It is as if each of the defaulters owes, without being able to pay, the amount of R$ 4,493.91. The highest average debt per person is in Santa Catarina: R$ 6,290.57.

Credit cards continue to be the main responsible for debts (28.7%) that cannot be paid, followed by basic accounts (22.25%) and retail (11.47%).

One of the factors that helps explain this scenario is the injection of money into the economy with the payment of the 13th salary. Serasa also lists Feirão Limpa Nome as a possible factor in reducing the number of defaulters.

According to the entity, 8.4 million agreements were made between November and December, “the largest number of negotiations in the history of Serasa”. Still according to the survey, women were the ones who most renegotiated their debts at the end of the year.
