“Bad feeling about the economy”: Tesla stops recruiting and plans cuts

by time news

CEO Tesla Elon Musk said he has a “super bad feeling” about the economy, and that the electric car maker should cut around 10% in the workforce, according to an internal email that reached Reuters. The company has close to 100,000 employees worldwide, so such a cut would mean the dismissal of about 10,000 men and women.

The email, titled “Suspension of All Recruitment Around the World,” was sent to Tesla executives on Thursday, according to Reuters, but Tesla did not respond to a request for comment.

Musk asked Tesla employees earlier this week to return to the office or leave the company. “Everyone at Tesla is required to spend a minimum of 40 hours a week in the office,” Musk wrote in another email sent to workers Tuesday night, titled “Remote work is no longer acceptable.” “If you do not show up, let’s say you resigned,” it read.

A tweeter asked on Twitter if he has anything to convey to people who think that a physical walk to work is a concept that has passed from the world already. Musk responded: “They have to pretend they work elsewhere.”
