The 15 main newspapers in Brazil recorded a drop of just over 15%, on average, in circulation in 2022. The sum of the average daily circulation of these traditional media publications ended last year at around 400,000.
The sum of the printed copies of 2022 is equivalent to approximately 50% of the total of four years ago, when Jair Bolsonaro’s government began, and the circulation reached almost 850 thousand. The biggest drop was from the Minas Gerais publication super news, which changed the frequency of circulation in April 2022: the newspaper, which was daily, started to be delivered, in physical format, only on Fridays. Among daily circulation vehicles, the biggest decreases were Folha de S.Paulo (-30%), O Popular (-25%) e The time (-20%). A Sheet, which reached 175 thousand daily copies, on average, in 2015, plummeted to 50 thousand. This equates to a seven-year shrinkage of 70% of traditional media “giants”.
When looking at the data in absolute numbers, the top 3 remains unchanged: The globe, Estadão e super news are the publications with the largest print circulation in Brazil. The globe closed 2021 in 3rd place, but reached the top in the last year. Reason: dropped less than competitors. THE Estadãowho was leader, fell to 2nd.
