I first noticed it in 2018, when the poet Sibel Schick said that the (perceived) fact that men are “coots” is a “structural problem.” South African women originally created the term who wanted to draw attention to the injustices that cannot be tolerated in their country. Here we see once again that the undifferentiated world of arguments has its returns.
The answer to #MenAreTrash is the popular hashtag #notallmen that almost three years later has the “opposite side”, which was created after the murder of British woman Sarah Everad by a police officer. The aim here is to draw attention to the fact that not all men are violent and that blanket condemnation of men is not helpful.
This September the discussion entered a new round.
