Initial impacts are focused on northern Italy,with precipitation expected to move progressively southward over the next 48 hours,extending from Milan to Rome. The early part of the week will also see snowfall, concentrated in the mountainous areas of Val d’Aosta, Piedmont, and Lombardy.
Widespread Rainfall and Severe Winds
According to forecasts, scattered to widespread rainfall, including thunderstorms, is anticipated across much of Italy. The Tyrrhenian sectors, Sicily, Sardinia, and portions of northern italy are expected to experience the most intense precipitation.
“The phenomena will be accompanied by heavy showers, frequent electrical activity and strong gusts of wind,” a senior official stated.
In addition to the rain, strong to stormy south-western winds are forecast to impact Emilia-Romagna, spreading to Lazio, Abruzzo, Molise, Campania, northern Puglia, and western Sicily throughout the day.These winds pose a threat of storm surges along exposed coastal areas.
Snowfall in the Alps and higher Elevations
Significant snowfall is expected in the Aosta Valley, generally above elevations of 100-1200 meters. Moderate accumulations are anticipated at lower altitudes, with heavier snowfall predicted at higher elevations.
