The “security” option was favored. Around thirty residents of Sewen (Haut-Rhin) were evacuated preventively as the dike of a pond threatens to give way, we learned from the prefecture on Tuesday, confirming information from the newspaper L’Alsace.

During the night from Monday to Tuesday, a water reservoir had already partially burst, leading to the flooding of eight homes, according to the regional daily. The thirty or so inhabitants of this village, which has 500, located in the Vosges Massif, were able to be rehoused for the night.

Weakened dike

“We fear that this water reservoir will fail since part of the dike was gutted by the stream that passed by. The emergency services went to look on site, and we chose the safety option, i.e. the evacuation of around thirty people,” explained Hubert Fluhr, mayor of Sewen, on BFM.

“Two or three houses were flooded, with up to 1m40 of water and mud. In one house, we couldn’t even open the garage door because the car was floating behind it. There is a 90% chance that this mud comes from the gullying of the dike,” continues village mayor Hubert Fluhr.

The Haut-Rhin has been placed by Météo France on yellow alert for floods. In Pas-de-Calais, returned to red flood alert after more than ten days of exceptional flooding, the level of several rivers rose on Tuesday, leading to new evacuations.

This umpteenth disruption should end at the end of the week. “We are seeing a drier scenario for Friday, with less rain and, perhaps, more pleasant weather,” Jérôme Lecou, forecaster at Météo France, said cautiously this Sunday.
