(ANSA) – ROME, 06 SEPTEMBER – The Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano, carried out an inspection of the Arch of Constantine this morning in Rome, damaged by lightning on 3 September, following which a fragment of the south-western corner frame of the monument broke off. The minister was accompanied by the Head of the Department for the Promotion of Cultural Heritage, Alfonsina Russo. This was announced in a note from the MIC. All the fragments that fell to the ground were recovered and placed in the Colosseum’s storage areas thanks to the timely intervention of technicians and staff from the Archaeological Park. Photographic surveys began in the early hours of the morning of 4 September and, with the help of a lifting platform, the affected area was made safe with the recovery of further damaged fragments and with prompt intervention on the surfaces. The affected area is part of the modern restoration of the roof of the attic of the Arch. As previously mentioned, the timely intervention is part of an extraordinary maintenance project on the southern face of the Arch that is already underway and whose continuation with the completion of the scaffolding has been ongoing since yesterday, September 5. “We intervened promptly, collecting the fragments that are now in storage and being analyzed. During the already scheduled maintenance intervention on the southern face, the detached fragments will be repositioned”, declared the Head of Department Russo at the end of the inspection. (ANSA).
