The Korea Badminton Association actively explained that the regulation that could strip national team members of their qualifications was not aimed at Ahn Se-young.
The Badminton Association explained in a press release on the 10th, “(Strengthening the national team disciplinary regulations) is adding detailed content to the provisions that existed since the national team operation guidelines were established in 2010.”
On the previous day (the 9th), a media outlet released the minutes of the Badminton Association’s board meeting at the beginning of this year.
According to this, if a player does not respond to the legitimate instructions of the coach and the association, he will be subject to a disciplinary action of less than 6 months of national team eligibility suspension. If he fails to respond twice, he will be subject to a disciplinary action of less than 1 year, and if he fails to respond three times, he will be permanently disqualified.
The media pointed out that this regulation was created to target Ahn Se-young, who was in conflict with the association, but the association actively explained it just one day after the report.
The association said, “We are making this announcement in the hopes that there will be no misunderstanding regarding recent media reports,” and “Since there are no detailed rules for the national team operation guidelines, we revised the regulations by referring to the disciplinary regulations of the Sports Fair Play Committee of the Korea Sports Council.”
He continued, “I would like to once again state that the content that this is aimed at Ahn Se-young is a speculative report.”
Meanwhile, Ahn Se-young won the women’s singles final at the Paris Olympics on the 5th by defeating He Bingzhao (China), becoming the first person in 28 years since Bang Soo-hyun at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics to win a gold medal in badminton singles.
But conflict arose later when he revealed that the association had taken his injuries lightly and failed to respond appropriately.
Since then, the conflict between Ahn Se-young and the association has expanded as the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Sports Council have begun to investigate the circumstances.
