jpnn.comJAKARTA – The badminton world lost a talented player. Chinese men’s singles badminton player, Zhang Zhi Jie, died after collapsing on the court during the 2024 BNI Badminton Asia Junior Championships match, Sunday night (30/6).

This was announced by Badminton Asia and the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) in a written statement received in Jakarta, Monday (1/7).

Zhang Zhi Jie was playing against Japan, facing Kazuma Kawamo in the Group D preliminary round at the Amongrogo Sports Hall, Yogyakarta. Zhang was declared dead on Sunday (30/6) at 23.20 WIB.

“Zhang Zhi Jie of China, a singles player, collapsed on court during a night match, was rushed to hospital and passed away at 23:20 local time yesterday,” read a joint statement from Badminton Asia and PBSI.

Zhi Jie was playing a group stage match against Japan when he collapsed and was attended to by the tournament doctor and medical team. “He was taken by an ambulance on standby in less than two minutes to be rushed to hospital.”

“Badminton Asia, PBSI and the Organizing Committee express their condolences and deepest sympathies to Zhang’s parents, family and the Chinese Badminton Association (CBA). “The badminton world has lost a talented player,” the statement concluded. (between/jpnn)
