BAE Systems unveiled the Brontanax, a new uncrewed collaborative combat aircraft, at the Farnborough International Airshow on July 22, 2026. Developed with the Royal Air Force since 2022, the stealthy drone is designed to fly alongside piloted jets and is expected to begin flight testing in 2027. The unveiling occurred during an event attended by the United Kingdom’s newly appointed Defence Secretary, Wes Streeting.

The debut of the Brontanax marks a significant expansion of the United Kingdom’s commitment to uncrewed aviation. As a collaborative combat aircraft (CCA), or "loyal wingman," the platform is designed to operate in tandem with human-piloted fighters to avoid Ukrainian-style attritional trench warfare, according to defense chiefs. The name Brontanax is derived from ancient Greek words meaning "thunder king."
Design and Technical Specifications
Faceted Fuselage and Low Observable Platform
Physically, the Brontanax is comparable in size to the Hawk advanced jet trainer, measuring approximately 41 feet in length with a 33-foot wingspan. The design incorporates features intended to reduce radar cross-section, including a faceted fuselage, a prominent chine line, and a wedge-shaped ventral air intake partially shrouded by a prominent "lip." While the drone is unlikely to achieve a very low observable (VLO) status, it is categorized as a low observable (LO) platform.
The airframe features a robust landing gear assembly, with a twin-wheel nose unit and substantial mains, which suggests potential utility for carrier launch and recovery or deployment from austere airfield operations. Internally, the deep fuselage suggests generous space for fuel and stores. While the initial prototype is fitted with a Williams turbofan, the company is considering the Rolls-Royce Orpheus powerplant family. A front view of the drone reveals a blister in the nose, likely housing a flight-test camera, and a low-observable aperture that could accommodate an infrared search and track system or other sensors.
Strategic Context and the Storm Fighter Program
Storm Fighter Program Sovereign CCA
The unveiling of the Brontanax follows the recent launch of the U.K.’s official Storm Fighter program. Earlier in July, the British government announced it would spend an initial £300 million ($401.10 million) within its defense investment plan to launch the sovereign CCA program. The project is seen as a vital step in the Royal Air Force’s ambition to establish what it terms "Europe’s first sixth-generation air force."
"We will adopt this as our operational concept demonstrator, and we’re going to get it in the air in 2027," said Defence Secretary Wes Streeting at the airshow.

For BAE Systems, the project represents a shift toward self-funded development. BAE Systems Group CEO Charles Woodburn noted that the company moved forward without the typical government co-investment that characterizes many new defense platforms. "We’ve put our money where our mouth is," Woodburn told Reuters, noting that the company aims for the drone to provide 70% to 80% of the capabilities of a fighter jet at under 25% of the cost, roughly $25 million. BAE expects it could enter service by 2030, with interest already shown by countries in Europe and the Middle East.
Operational Goals and Future Testing
Electronic Warfare and Precision Strike Missions
The Brontanax is intended to perform electronic warfare, precision strike, and air-to-air missions. By integrating with existing platforms like the Eurofighter Typhoon, the F-35, and the future Tempest combat jet, the drones are expected to extend the reach of the U.K.’s air power. The aircraft is currently being prepared for ground-based testing at BAE’s facility in Warton, Lancashire, with reports suggesting it could participate in a NATO exercise as early as next year.
While BAE has not provided specific performance metrics or details regarding its autonomy system, the open-architecture design is intended to allow for rapid software upgrades. The industry is currently moving quickly in this space; while the Brontanax is slated for first flight in 2027, international competitors such as Boeing are already conducting flight tests with the MQ-28 Ghost Bat, which could be flying for Australia by 2028.
