Baghdad/Al-Masala Al-Hadath: The Erbil government accuses Baghdad of “violating” the agreements to form the government, demanding that it send its financial dues, while the Baghdad government reported that it fulfilled its obligations and that the region did not deliver oil revenues, calling for the Kurdish citizens not to be held responsible for non-compliance.
The region’s share in the financial budget for the years 2023, 2024 and 2025, which the Iraqi parliament voted on last June, amounted to about 16.609 trillion dinars, but disagreements returned again in this regard.

The official spokesman for the regional government, Bishwa Hawrami, accused the Baghdad government of “practicing a policy of starvation against us, did not fulfill its obligations, and mixed the citizens’ livelihood with political issues,” adding: “The Iraqi government decided to send 500 billion Iraqi dinars (the dollar is equivalent to 1,552 dinars) to the region, This is not enough to pay employees’ salaries.”

In addition to the “financial escalation,” disputes escalated between the regional government and the center in Iraq this week, after confrontations between Iraqi security forces and Kurdish protesters in Kirkuk.

The head of the regional government, Masoud Barzani, called on the central government to open an investigation into the incident, cease fire, and enhance dialogue between the two parties.

There is a possibility that the disputes will continue, even if the mediations lead to calm, because solutions, according to experience, were always temporary and short-term and were not strategic solutions.

Among the files that may explode the situation at any moment is the Kurdistan region’s demand to annex a number of disputed areas to its territory, while the central government refuses to do so.
Article 140 of the Iraqi Constitution stipulates holding a referendum in disputed areas to determine their fate, but the central government and the Kurdistan Region have not agreed on how to implement this article.
The regional government demands the right to control the natural resources in its lands, while the central government rejects this.

Disagreements between the two parties have escalated in recent years, leading to a state of tension in the country.

It is expected that these differences will continue to affect the political situation in Iraq in the future.
