A business like this does not exist again in the Rhine-Main area or beyond. There are several reasons for this. Neida Samira Ruiz Fernandez designs almost all of the pieces in her Nei-s shop herself. In addition, the pieces only consist of natural raw materials such as wool, fique palm, leather and silk. The designer, who comes from Colombia, has the goods manufactured in her country of origin – and only by women from the indigenous Zenú and Wayuu peoples. She only makes the crochet sandals (69 euros) herself. And they are almost exclusively unique pieces: no anchor bag, no belt, no sandal, no mochila, a kind of backpack, is the same as the other piece. It couldn’t be more unique.
The store at Stresemannstrasse 7 in Bad Nauheim has been selling since mid-April. The word has gotten around: customers come from all over the region. The name Nei-s is a play on words, means “beautiful” in English and refers to the owner’s first name.
What also makes the business special is that it is the first pop-up shop in the spa town, launched by the city. Before moving in, the store was empty for two years. The landlord was apparently able to cope with this – but such long-term vacancies are a nuisance for the city. They make the chic shopping street visually less attractive. As a result, one vacancy often leads to the next. The city is counteracting this with the “Open Up” concept.
For Fernandez and her sister Adiela Candelo-Römer, the concept represents an opportunity. You now have six months to make your mark. If that works, they should be able to raise the money through the sales that they currently lack for the local rent, as they openly say. The first two weeks encourage the businesswomen. The most expensive piece, a poncho for almost 400 euros, has already been sold, but is coming back with a different design.
According to the owner, an anchor bag that takes its name from its shape and is ideal for shopping is particularly popular (199 euros). A handbag tightly woven from fique fibers with a round handle made from cow horn costs the same amount. For those on a small budget there are braided belts or a clutch (29 euros) and small wallets (12 euros). A lot of things are colorful – “just like spring and summer should be,” say the sisters.
