A large amount of drugs was dumped on the German island of Borkum in the North Sea, DPA reported today, citing sources from the prosecutor’s office.

In April, a tourist found a number of suspicious bags tied with a life jacket on a beach and reported it to the police. The prosecutor’s office in the city of Aurich has now confirmed that the sacks contained a total of about one ton of cocaine. This is the largest amount of drugs that has appeared on the North Sea coast in the province of Lower Saxony in recent years.

The federal police has taken over the investigation, a spokesman for the prosecutor’s office in Aurich told DPA. It is still not clear where the packages came from, why they were found on the beach and whether there are any suspects in the case, BTA reported.

News of the find appeared in the media back in April, but only now have the authorities revealed that there were drugs inside.

In recent years, packages of drugs have repeatedly been found washed up by the waves on the North Sea coast in the area. In 2021, for example, workers discovered 25 kilograms of cocaine on a dike near Aurich. A similar quantity of the drug was found shortly before on the island of Baltrum. Packages of cocaine were also washed up on island beaches in early 2017.
