Bahia beat Botafogo 2-1 this Sunday (5) for the fifth round of the Brazilian Championship. At the Nilton Santos stadium, Everaldo opened the scoring with a penalty for Bahia, Jeffinho equalized for Botafogo and Rafael Ratão found the net to declare victory for the Bahian tricolor.
The refereeing was one of the protagonists of the match. The penalty that resulted in Bahia’s goal required a VAR check. Referee Rodrigo Klein went to the video to review the move and awarded the penalty for touching the arm of Hugo, from Botafogo.
Furthermore, the home team had two goals disallowed for offside. In the first of them, just seven minutes into the game, Luiz Henrique was well ahead. In the second, in the first minute of the second half, when Bahia was winning the game, it was controversial. The VAR marked a very correct offside by Damián Suárez and the Botafogo team was left scolded.
With the result, Bahia reached 10 points and took second place in the Brasileirão. Botafogo stopped at nine points and stopped being the leader, losing the top of the table to Athletico-PR, which has the same 10 points as Bahia, but a higher goal difference. As a result, Glorioso fell to third place.
Now Botafogo becomes the key to the Libertadores. Glorioso faces LDU, at home, next Wednesday (8). Bahia has the week free to train. Rogério Ceni’s team only returns to the field next Sunday (12) against Red Bull Bragantino in the sixth round of the Brasileirão.
