Kochi: Jomon Puthenpuraykkal, who has filed a petition in the High Court against the granting of bail to the accused in the abhaya case. The CBI did not respond to the defendants’ appeal. Kochi: The trial court has stayed the verdict in the Abhaya case and granted bail to the accused. The bail conditions are both Rs 5 lakh, not to leave the state and not to be involved in other crimes during the bail period. The petition was filed by Sister Sefi and Father Thomas Kottur seeking bail during the appeal period. The High Court is also considering appeals filed by the Thiruvananthapuram CBI against the special court verdict. A division bench of Justices K Vinod Chandran and C Jayachandran passed the order. Punishment proceedings have been suspended on the basis of the order. The court also set bail at Rs 5 lakh and ordered him not to leave the state and not to commit any other offenses.

On December 23, 2021, the court sentenced the accused in the asylum case to double life imprisonment. After 28 years of legal proceedings, the first defendant in the asylum case, Father Thomas Kottur, and the third defendant, Sister Steffi, were found guilty under various sections, including murder. However, in the appeal, the accused had questioned the charge of murder on the basis of the statements of only two witnesses. Moreover, the petition also calls into question the authenticity of the revelation made years later by Raju, also known as Adaikka Raju, a witness in the case.
