The death toll in the capital’s Bailey Road fire has risen to 46.

Mustafa Abdullah Al Noor (NDC, Dhaka) gave this information on behalf of Dhaka Deputy Commissioner on Friday (March 1).

Before this, the Minister of Health Dr. Samanta Lal Sen confirmed the death toll of 44 people.

The fire broke out at the building on Bailey Road at around 10pm on Thursday (February 29). After extinguishing the fire, the injured were rescued and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.

Eyewitnesses said that after the fire broke out on the first and second floors of the building, it spread upwards. After a while, the fire service personnel came and tried to put out the fire. Besides, with the help of cranes, they brought down the people who took shelter on the seventh floor and roof of the building. The fire was brought under control around 11:50 pm with the efforts of 13 units of the fire service.

Meanwhile, the process of handing over the dead bodies started today, Friday (March 1) around 5:30 am. Earlier in the night, the police prepared the status report of the victims at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. After that, the process of handing over the bodies to the relatives began. As of writing this report, the bodies of 33 people have been handed over to their relatives, said DMK mortuary registrar Prashant Roy.
