With a speaker and to the rhythm of Ecuadorian music, older adults with diseases such as high blood pressure and adolescents from the community participate in dance therapy organized by the Daule Urban Health Center, Guayas province.

In this space, an average of 45 people between the ages of 17 and 82 enjoy this physical activity that aims to improve the quality of life of users and enjoy good health.

The day begins around 8:00 in the morning, the participants perform warm-up exercises, then coordinated movements that are dictated by a dance specialist and at 15-minute intervals there is a space for hydration.

Within this group of people is Alfredo Maya, 74, who suffers from high blood pressure and Parkinson’s. With the sports routine, little by little, his joint pain has been decreasing. “I began to do dance therapy, I can now move my body better,” said the user.

The people who are part of this group, prior to their admission, undergo laboratory tests, weight and height measurements to diagnose any disease, and thus comply with the sports routine without complications.

Edwin Andrade, General Physician at the health center, adds that with dance therapy vulnerable groups receive nutritional information to maintain a proper diet. “Many times people confuse household tasks with exercises and do not form part of these healthy spaces,” the doctor remarked.

The dance therapy program that is taught at the Daule Urbano Health Center is totally free and open to all ages. The exercises are dictated from Monday to Friday, in the patios of the operational unit.
