On Friday, the statements of victims Ulviyya Muradova (Alovlu) and Orkhan Abdullayev were scheduled to be heard in the case of social activist Bakhtiyar Hajiyev at the Baku Court of Serious Crimes. However, they did not come to the proceedings and the judge suggested to adjourn the hearings to the next session.

Bakhtiyar Hajiyev and his lawyers asked the court to ensure that they are forcibly brought. The judge said that this measure will be possible if they do not come next time.

Hajiyev pointed out that the signatures of Punhan Abilov, the investigator of the Yasamal District Police Department, and Jahangir Ismayilov, the doctor-expert who gave an opinion on the injuries of the victim Muradova, differed significantly in the various materials of the criminal case. He asked the court to verify these signatures. However, the prosecutor asked not to consider the petition as it is difficult to clarify this issue without the participation of these persons. The judge said that in the future, Abilov and Ismayilov may be invited to the court to clarify the issue.

The court did not grant the motion of the defense to videotape the proceedings. Muradova’s representative requested that the part of the meeting regarding her client be held in closed mode, but the court did not grant this request.

Later, Hajiyev testified. He said that the investigation against him was “ordered”, “biased” and “incompetently” conducted. Due to his conflict with Muradova, the criminal case against Muradova was terminated in October 2022. Hajiyev was told that the leadership of the Ministry of Internal Affairs instructed not to bring the women to criminal responsibility.

The investigation was resumed after Bakhtiyar Hajiyev called for the imposition of sanctions against the Azerbaijani authorities due to the violation of human rights in the country.

He was called to the police station and warned that he would be punished if he did not stop these calls. He was arrested the day after an individual sanction was imposed against the Azerbaijani police officer.

Hajiyev also said that he does not understand why the charge against him with the article of “smuggling” was not terminated. He noted that he was not in Georgia in 2019-2022, and that he received a negative response to inquiries about his bank accounts and property in Georgia.

The next session of the court is scheduled for March 1.
