The minister responsible for culture and innovation spoke about this to journalists before the two-day informal meeting of the ministers of higher education and research in Budapest within the framework of the Hungarian EU presidency. As he said, the strategic partnership, which is about the cooperation of Hungarian universities, vocational training institutions and companies, will be put up for discussion.
Balázs Hankó reported that
the meeting will discuss the draft European diploma, reducing the fragmentation of the European Research Area, as well as the topic of scientific research.
The host Hungarian minister referred to the report published by the former Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi on the future of the EU’s competitiveness, in which he stated: Europe needs a competitive turnaround. He added: if we look only at the last decade, we see that the scientific performance of the EU has decreased by 8 percent, while China and the United States have pulled past us.
“We are formulating the proposal that wants to reduce the fragmentation of the European Research Area and innovation. A turnaround in competitiveness and cooperation is needed, such as in the laser research laboratory in Szeged, where an agreement will be signed with the Czech Republic and Germany on Tuesday”
he explained.
Balázs Hankó spoke about the draft European diploma proposed by the European Commission, which would strengthen cooperation between European universities in the international arena. He added that, for the time being, it is questionable whether this issue can be resolved under national or Brussels jurisdiction.
“We agree that closer university cooperation is needed.
At the meeting, excellent speakers will express their opinions on the subject, including János Ede Szilágyi, professor of the Central European Academy, Levente Kovács, rector of Óbuda University, and the president of the European University Association will also be with us,” said the minister.
He emphasized that Nobel laureate Ferenc Krausz, Hungarian physicist, and neurobiologist Balázs Gulyás, president of the HUN-REN Hungarian Research Network, will participate in the plenary session of the informal meeting of the ministers of higher education and research and give a presentation.
