In Hamburg, a balcony collapsed and six people fell. Of those the lastInterview, test engineer Lydia Thiesemann explains why most balconies need regular maintenance – and what the warning signs of a dilapidated balcony are.

Ms. Thiesemann, as a test engineer she regularly checks the balconies. What did you think when you heard about the accident?
I just looked at the picture. I will say that this is not all that surprising. But these simple balconies have one weakness: they are stuck to the ceiling behind them. And there is no excess with these cantilevered balconies. This means that if the balcony has exceeded its load carrying capacity, it will break.
