HBO Announces Baldur’s Gate TV series, Picking Up After the Game’s epic Conclusion

LOS ANGELES, February 6, 2026 – HBO is venturing into the Forgotten realms, developing a television series based on the critically acclaimed role-playing game Baldur’s Gate, Deadline reported today. The series will pick up instantly following the events of Baldur’s Gate 3,the 2023 hit that captivated players with its intricate story and compelling characters.

A New Saga Begins in the City of Baldur’s Gate

Baldur’s Gate 3, released in 2023, saw a diverse group of adventurers unite against the Cult of the Absolute, a sinister organization masking the machinations of the Mind Flayers and their plot to invade the Forgotten Realms. The game garnered widespread praise and commercial success, but developer Larian Studios has stated they won’t be creating a fourth installment, leaving the future of this Dungeons & Dragons world in Hasbro’s hands.

What makes adapting Baldur’s gate 3 to television so challenging? The game’s immense player agency and the popularity of the voice actors who brought the characters to life present unique hurdles for the showrunners.

Craig Mazin, known for his work on HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us, will serve as the creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner for the new series. Joining him as executive producers are Jacqueline Lesko, Cecil O’Connor, and Gabriel Marano of Hasbro Entertainment. Chris Perkins, a former senior story designer for Dungeons & Dragons at Wizards of the Coast who transitioned to Critical Role last year, will consult on the project.

Hasbro’s Attempts to Expand the Baldur’s Gate Universe

Since the game’s release, Hasbro has faced challenges in capitalizing on its popularity.Efforts have included merchandise releases-some more triumphant than others-and integrating characters into projects like the now-scrapped Virtual Tabletop system, Project Sigil. The TV series represents a notable step toward expanding the Baldur’s Gate franchise beyond the game itself.

However, the adaptation isn’t without its potential pitfalls. The strong connection fans have with the original voice cast, the need to reconcile the game’s player-driven choices with a linear narrative, and the complexities of portraying the customizable protagonist, Tav, all pose considerable creative challenges.

Other video game adaptations have taken different approaches-some closely mirroring the source material, others forging their own path, and still others attempting to sidestep direct
