At least five people died in particularly violent thunderstorms which swept Croatia, Slovenia and Bosnia on Wednesday July 19 after several days of scorching temperatures in the Balkans. “This is an unprecedented storm and in terms of damage”, said the mayor of the Croatian capital Zagreb, Tomislav Tomasevic. Electric poles were damaged, many residential roofs were blown off by strong winds and several streets were flooded.

This storm comes against the background of extreme weather conditions that many parts of the world are facing. At least four people – three in Croatia and one in Slovenia – were killed by falling trees, including two in Zagreb, where a hospital was also flooded, according to police and local media reports. A woman was also killed in Brcko, in northern Bosnia, according to local media.

In Zagreb, teams were hard at work Thursday morning cleaning up debris, with authorities urging people not to go to parks where trees were uprooted and electricity poles damaged. The high winds also caused a crane to fall, seriously injuring the person in the cabin.
