San Salvador. The Electoral Code has been reformed once again, this time so that the Supreme Electoral Tribunal incorporates the flag of the political party or coalition, the photographs of the candidates for the presidency and vice presidency, as well as their names, on the presidential ballot paper.
This was approved by 67 deputies so that Salvadorans can exercise their right to vote directly, secretly and transparently in the 2024 presidential elections, for which they modified articles 185, 186 and 197 of the Electoral Code.
Thus, the Supreme Electoral Tribunal will incorporate in the ballot paper the photographs of the faces of the candidates for the presidency and vice presidency of the Republic, such was the proposal of the president of the Legislative Assembly, Ernesto Castro.
The legislator considered that it is necessary to reinforce the democracy that currently exists in the country, since citizens will be able to express their support for the candidates by marking the photos on the ballot papers or the flag of the political party that proposes them or through the photograph of their face.
According to the reform, these are the main legal changes: it validates the brand by flag or by face, in the election for President and Vice President of the Republic; modifies the design of the ballot paper, which will contain the flag of the party or coalition, the name of the party or coalition, the photograph of the candidates for President and Vice President, as well as the name of the candidates for the presidency and vice presidency.
In addition, the possibility that Salvadorans can exercise their right to vote by marking the face of the candidate President and Vice President of the Republic is incorporated; modifies the way in which each valid vote is counted, since all those in which the voter’s will is clearly determined by any mark on the flag or on the photograph of the candidate for President are considered valid votes.
