by times news cr

This edition of the “Research Letter” marks both the end of the 2019-2023 strategic plan and the launch of that of the 2024-2028 period, the ultimate objective of which is to establish Bank Al-Maghrib as a committed and innovative player serving the economy and the citizen, we read in the editorial of this 8th issue.

As part of this new plan, economic research aims to strengthen the Bank’s expertise and consolidate its collaboration with the research ecosystem.

It is in this perspective that the new research program is being developed, which aims to deepen understanding of the economy and to inform choices in terms of monetary policy and financial stability, while contributing to debates on public policies.

In terms of achievements, the year 2023 was marked mainly by the publication of four working papers on important themes for the national economy: “Long-term transmission of exchange rate variations to prices in Morocco”, “Impact of the Basel III reform on Moroccan banks”, “Estimation of non-transactional cash in Morocco” and “Short-term finance, long-term effects: theory and empirical lessons in the Moroccan context”.

The Bank has also strengthened its outreach to the academic community. Thus, on the sidelines of the Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank held in Marrakech, Bank Al-Maghrib organized, in collaboration with the World Bank, the third edition of the Conference of the Research Network of Central Banks of the MENA region.

This meeting, on the theme of “Labor Markets and Structural Transformation”, attracted renowned researchers, including Professor Esther Duflo, winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics.

Similarly, the year 2023 saw the holding of several scientific events. These include internal seminars addressing current topics for the Bank, as well as conferences organized in different cities of the Kingdom within the framework of the Global Money Week and the Bank’s Presence of Place program.

Finally, the year 2023 saw the organization of the ceremony of the first edition of the Bank Al-Maghrib Prize for Economic and Financial Research.

This initiative, which is part of the Bank’s CSR policy, demonstrates its commitment to the development of economic research. After a rigorous selection process, three laureates were awarded for their scientific contributions.

As for the year 2024, the Bank organized in Dakhla the fifth edition of the International Macroeconomics and Finance Days, from May 22 to 24, under the theme “Economic integration in Africa: the path to a more prosperous future”, in collaboration with the Cadi Ayyad University of Marrakech, the University of Basel, and in partnership with the Regional Council of Dakhla-Oued Eddahab.

In addition, the Bank will soon launch the second edition of the Bank Al-Maghrib Prize for Economic and Financial Research.
