The simultaneous transport of goods and passengers on board the same vehicle is prohibited in Benin. As a prelude to the application of this measure, the National Land Transport Agency (ANaTT) raised awareness among road stakeholders during a meeting held in Cotonou on Monday October 16, 2023.

The heads of passenger and goods transport associations were present at this meeting initiated by the ANaTT which also involved the National Road Safety Center (CNSR).

Mixed transport is a common mode of transport in Benin. However, it is prohibited by the texts.

A series of actions will be taken to eliminate this dangerous practice, “source of many cases of accidentteeth,” announced Aubin Adoukonou, Director General of the CNSR. The awareness raising initiated towards road stakeholders will be followed by a repressive phase.

According to the Director General of ANaTT, Richard Dada, the awareness period will last two weeks. The Republican Police will then take over to sanction drivers who do not respect the regulations.

Leaders of passenger and freight transport associations have promised to redouble their efforts to raise awareness among their colleagues and encourage behavior change. “Our union members are very responsible people. They are well aware of the dangers of transporting people and goods simultaneously in the same vehicle. With this awareness, we will solve this problem,” declared Essenam Tahoulan, vice-president of the Regroupement des transport companies par coach in Benin.

ANaTT took the opportunity to learn about the challenges faced by carriers and drivers. Several other points were also discussed during this meeting, including overloading, illegal parking, the adjustment of transport rates in relation to the price of fuel, and unfair competition.
