Banana Pineapple Flies to Dubai; Flag off with GI Tago

Kochi: Banana pineapple is also available in the Gulf countries. Vazhakulam Pineapple’s first GI tagged export from Kerala to Dubai and Sharjah. The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has flagged off its first export. The flag off was held as a virtual event. The first export, APEDA Chairman Dr. Flagged off by M Member IAS. Officials from the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority and GI pineapple growers attended the flag-off ceremony.

Fair Trade Links and FairExport India Pvt Ltd export GI-tagged pineapple bananas to Dubai and Sharjah respectively. Fair TradeLinks is a newly registered exporter of APEDA to facilitate the export of GI products from India to the Middle East and elsewhere.

Geographical indication (GI) tagging of agricultural products enhances the prestige and credibility of the product among consumers in the international market. As a marketing tool, the GI tag enables better prices for export products. APEDA takes the initiative to promote GI tagged products from India. This will ultimately lead to an increase in exports.

During 2020-21, India exported fresh and dried pineapples worth US $ 2.68 million, of which 44% came from Kerala. Major export destinations are UAE, Qatar, Maldives, Nepal and France. Pineapple grown in the Vazhakulam area of ​​Kerala received the GI tag in 2009 for its taste, unique aroma and taste.
