Banco Santander, chaired by Ana Botinhas started donating its first 130 banks made from recycled bank cards.

A year ago, the entity made available to its customers in Spain the possibility of handing in their expired or damaged cards to recycle them and transform them into street furniture.

The first cities to receive these banks will be Valencia, Malaga and Santander, thanks to the collaboration agreements signed by Santander Bank with the town halls, and also with the Government of Cantabria. In this way, public institutions will not have to pay any cost for furniture made with recycled bank cards.

It will be these same public institutions that decide the most appropriate or necessary areas for the installation of the benches donated by the entity chaired by Ana Botín.

Santander Bank has indicated that it has already recycled more than 680,000 expired or damaged cards. This initiative is included in its commitment to the circular economy, and to cut its environmental impacts.

The process begins when the customer hands in their card at one of the ATMs authorized for this purpose. Subsequently, he receives a message confirming that his card has been recycled, and the complete process of managing expired cards begins, to convert them into the raw material necessary to manufacture street furniture.

Santander Bank It intends that, by 2025, all its cards are made with sustainable materials in all the countries in which it operates. Since 2021, debit and credit cards in Spain, Portugal, Poland, and the United Kingdom are already manufactured with this type of material. In this way, only in Spain, Banco Santander will save more than 22 tons of single-use plastic in 2023, and will avoid the emission of 360 tons of CO2 equivalent, thanks to the manufacture of more than 4.5M cards from sustainable materials .
