The banks are beginning to adapt their commercial policies to the already consolidated scenario of high interest rates. Although the vast majority are reluctant to remunerate their accounts and deposits -or offer a minimum return-, some do at least eliminate commissions.

This is the case of Santander, which since the middle of this month has been sending letters to its clients to inform them of an important novelty: the bank abolishes commissions for users with balances of at least 25,000 euros in checking, savings and time deposit accounts permanent.

Until now, this exemption was reserved for account holders who kept that balance in investment funds, pension plans or savings insurance. There are other ways to save the maintenance fees included in the Santander Account, which can reach up to 240 euros per year (20 euros per month).

One of them consists of having the payroll domiciled, unemployment benefit (in both cases of at least 600 euros), or a pension (of at least 300 euros), payment of the self-employed quota, or aid from the CAP ( Common Agricultural Policy). In addition, it is required to have at least three domiciled receipts, or use any of the bank’s cards a minimum of six times.

Customers with at least 1,000 bank shares, and when one of their holders is under 29 years of age, are also exempt from paying the Santander Account maintenance fee.

By partially meeting these requirements, or other different ones, customers have the possibility of saving half of the monthly maintenance fee (10 euros).

Other Santander accounts without commissions

In any case, all holders of a Santander Account are exempt from commission and card maintenance, for transfers in euros over the internet, mobile banking or at ATMs -for any amount-. This is valid for both national and those made to countries of the European Union. Nor will they have to pay a commission for debit cash withdrawals at bank ATMs around the world.

There is also the possibility of contracting an account ‘online’, without maintenance fees of any kind or conditions.

Regarding the basic payment account, the holder pays a single commission of 3 euros per month, which entitles him to carry out up to a maximum of 120 payment operations -within the European Union-, execution of debts and transfers.
