Santander Bankchaired by Ana Botín, aims to reforest more than 50 hectares in the town of Torgas, in Ibias (Asturias). The planted trees are expected to absorb about 27,000 tons of CO2 over the next 50 years.

In this way, the selected area will become part of the ‘second Santander forest’ contemplated in the ‘Green Engine’ project of the Repsol Foundation for the creation of forests in Spain.

The recovery work after a fire on Mount Torga, with clearing and digging work, began several months ago, and will then proceed with the planting phase.

Of the 53 hectares that will be treated, 7.27 hectares have been used in regeneration, while the remaining 45.73 hectares are intended for the planting of almost 59,000 trees of species such as Scots pine and resin pine or birch, as well as such as rebollos oaks, hunter rowans, apple trees and wild cherry trees.

Mount Torga is the second of the three Santander forests of ‘Motor Verde’. The first is located in the Extremaduran town of Caminomorisco.

It is estimated that the three forests will balance the emission of 82,000 tons of CO2, in addition to generating a social benefit in terms of employment, since more than 15,000 jobs have been created according to estimates by Banco Santander itself. On the other hand, the initiative strengthens the local business fabric and boosts the economy of rural environments.

The ‘Motor Verde’ project seeks reforestation with some 60 million trees from different areas. The entity chaired by Ana Botín contributes to the initiative with an investment of 1.5 million euros.
