The Advisory Council of the Interim Government approved the decision to cancel the ‘Protection of Family Members of the Father of the Nation Act 2009’ made for the protection of the family members of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. If the law is repealed, none of Bangabandhu’s family will get special security. Besides, the proposal of Bangladesh’s accession to the International Convention on Anti-Disappearance has been approved.

According to the press release, the provisions related to the provision of security to the family members of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman cannot be implemented in the administrative management, so the issue of security provisions of the chief adviser of the interim government along with the deletion of some provisions of the law was unanimously approved in the meeting of the advisory council. has been approved.

It is further stated that the ‘Father of the Nation Family Members Security Act, 2009’ (Act No. 63 of 2009) was framed and promulgated as per the decision of the previous Government. Later on 15/05/2015 gazette was issued to provide special security and facilities as per the said Act. The Act was made to provide state privileges only to members of a family; Which is a clear discrimination.

Following the anti-discrimination student uprising, the current interim government has taken a firm stance on eliminating all discrimination. At present, when the parliament is dissolved, it is necessary to take urgent measures in this regard and issue an ordinance to repeal this law. In this context, the draft ‘Security of Family Members of the Father of the Nation (Repeal) Ordinance, 2024’ was finally approved by the Advisory Council meeting subject to vetting by the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Department.
