Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s 49th death anniversary today. On August 15, 1975, a group of deviant soldiers brutally killed Bangabandhu and his family.

Apart from Bangabandhu, his wife Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib, three sons Sheikh Kamal, Sheikh Jamal and Sheikh Russell, daughter-in-law Sultana Kamal and Rozi Jamal were killed on this day in Dhanmondi number 32 residence. Bangabandhu’s only brother Sheikh Abu Nasser, military secretary Jamiluddin Ahmed, SB official Siddiqur Rahman and army member Syed Mahbubul Haque were also killed by the assassins.

Bangabandhu’s nephew Jubo League leader Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni’s residence was also attacked on the same day. He and his pregnant wife Arju Moni were murdered. The assassins also killed Bangabandhu’s sister-in-law Abdur Rab Serniabat, his daughter Baby, son Arif Serniabat, grandson Sukant Babu, elder brother’s son Sajib Serniabat and a relative named Abdul Naeem Khan.

Bangabandhu’s two daughters Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana survived as they were out of the country.

August 15 was observed as National Day of Mourning since the Awami League government led by Sheikh Hasina came to power. A public holiday was declared on this day. However, in the face of the student movement, Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post of Prime Minister on August 5. Then the interim government canceled the public holiday of August 15.
