Bangkok Residents Transform Flooded Street into Floating Market

Bangkok locals transformed a flooded street into a floating market as severe floods inundated the Thai capital, with vendors selling fish and vegetables from foam boxes while buyers waded or paddled between stalls.

Residents in Bangkok have turned a flooded plaza in front of a shopping mall into a temporary floating market, adapting to prolonged flooding that has declared the city a disaster zone. Sellers wade through water to display goods like fish and vegetables on Styrofoam boxes, while buyers navigate the area on foot or by boat, according to reports from multiple outlets.

A Floating Market Emerges

The makeshift market appeared in the Bang Kapi district near Pantip Plaza, where vendors like Marisa Singprakhon moved goods outdoors to accommodate customers. If customers have to go inside, it’s quite difficult, because the water level goes down and up. So, we stand outside the flooded area to sell goods to customers, she said, highlighting the practical adjustments made amid the crisis.

Pradit Monso, a 59-year-old salesman, described the situation as manageable compared to others. We can still go out, so the situation is not too bad, he said, though he acknowledged the broader struggles faced by residents whose homes and vehicles were submerged. The market's emergence shows the resilience of local communities.

Economic Fallout from the Floods

Economists warn of significant financial impacts from the floods, which have affected 41 provinces across Thailand. Aat Pisanwanich, an economist at Rangsit University, estimated losses of at least 11 billion baht (327 million USD), with Thailand’s GDP growth this year potentially dropping 0.3 percentage points to 2.1%, and third-quarter growth falling 0.5 points to 1.7%. The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce projected Bangkok alone could lose 7 billion baht, with nationwide losses reaching 12.3 billion baht.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration declared a state of disaster on September 26 after nearly 300 mm (12 inches) of rain fell over 48 hours, submerging roads and displacing thousands. At least eight people have died, and over 580,000 homes have been affected, according to the interior ministry.

Resilience and Uncertainty

Despite the challenges, residents like Marisa and Pradit emphasize perseverance. We all have to work and keep trying. Many people have it much harder than us, Pradit said, reflecting the community’s determination. However, the long-term economic and infrastructural consequences remain uncertain.
