Dhaka: For the first time in a decade and a half after the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government in Bangladesh and her leaving the country, no program was allowed to be held on August 15 on the anniversary of the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family. Awami League workers who reached the residence in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi Road No. 32 area to pay tribute were beaten up, after which more than 100 were hospitalized. On August 15, 1975, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of the nation of Bangladesh and the then President, and almost all the members of his family were killed in this very residence. Only his two daughters Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rihanna survived because they were out of the country.
The Bangladesh Army safely evacuated 30 people who had come to pay tribute from there on Thursday afternoon. All of them were taken from there in four vehicles of the Army and Bangladesh Border Guard. According to the report, all of them were beaten with sticks and pipes. Just a day before, the interim government of Bangladesh had cancelled the holiday on the anniversary of the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur. Sheikh Hasina’s son, who lives in Washington, had appealed to Awami League workers to reach Dhanmondi Road on August 15 and pay tribute.
Jamaat-e-Islami was also present
The protesters of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement did not allow anyone to gather in front of the house on Thursday. Anyone who was going to put up a picture of the founder of Bangladesh or anyone claiming to be from the Awami League was being beaten up on sight. Along with the students, a large number of people from Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Shibir were also present with sticks. During this, many people were beaten up there.
Protesters have occupied the area since night
This time Awami League leaders observed the anniversary of Bangabandhu’s assassination under very different circumstances. Most of the party leaders are in hiding after Sheikh Hasina left the country. When Awami League President Sheikh Hasina, who is living in India, called for observing the anniversary, party workers announced on social media that they would go to Dhanmondi Road No. 32 to pay tribute. But, since midnight on Wednesday, protesters of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement had occupied the area. This included Jamaat-e-Islami workers as well. Hundreds of protesters were in front of the house since morning. They gathered around the building around 6 am and stopped those trying to pay tribute.
