Dhaka: Bangladesh’s Sheikh Hasina-led government has temporarily banned most of the popular social media apps in the country. These include major apps like Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp and YouTube. This action restricts access to these widely used apps across the country. This decision has been taken at a time when protests have started once again in Bangladesh on the issue of reservation. Violence has taken place in many parts of the country during the protests that broke out on Friday. Two people have died and 100 have been injured in this violence. Thousands of students took to the streets and demonstrated in Dhaka on Friday.
There has been no official statement from the Bangladesh government regarding the ban on social media sites. The Times of India and Global Eyes News have given information about the ban in their reports. The report said that the Bangladeshi government has banned its citizens from using popular social media apps including Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and WhatsApp. On Friday, Global Eyes News first gave information about this ban through its official X account.

A ban was also imposed last month

Last month, in July, the Bhimta platform was banned in Bangladesh. Curfew was imposed in the country after anti-reservation protests. Instagram and Facebook were also suspended during this period. After the protests in July, a decision was taken to ban internet and social sites. After several days of violent protests, the Supreme Court gave its decision on the reservation quota, after which the situation was calming down but protests have started again in the country.

This time in Bangladesh, students have come out on the streets demanding justice for those killed in the violence. Students gathered at many places in Dhaka and clashed with the security forces. During this, the security forces fired tear gas shells to disperse the protesters.
