Bangladesh has protested the statement made by the United States with false information about the death of two people agitating for the reform of quota system in government jobs.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs protested in a statement on Tuesday (July 16) in view of the statement of Matthew Miller, the spokesperson of the US Department of State regarding the ongoing quota reform movement.

“We are very ‘disappointed’ in the response of US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller,” Ministry spokesperson Sehli Sabreen said in a statement. A US State Department spokesman said two students were killed in Washington on Monday. It is baseless. The use of such baseless and unverified information may increase violence and undermine the efforts of the Bangladesh government.

The spokesperson added that maintaining a peaceful environment is essential to allow non-violent protests or agitations. Freedom of expression and peaceful assembly are cornerstones of our democracy. The Bangladesh government is determined to uphold that right.

Pointing out that there is no place for violence in democracy and politics, he said that recently there was an attack on a peaceful gathering of former US President Donald Trump. We are deeply concerned about the incident. Such violence is against values. The Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Bangladesh have separately condemned the attack.

Sehli Sabreen also said that Bangladesh is committed to work with the United States to uphold democracy and democratic values.

It should be noted that US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said in a regular briefing on Monday that the United States is aware of the widespread student protests in various places, including Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. The United States has condemned the attack on the protesting ordinary students. Hundreds of people were injured and two were killed in the attack. We are monitoring this matter.

On freedom of expression and the right to peaceful assembly, he further said that the right to expression and assembly serves as an essential foundation for any thriving democracy. We condemn any form of violence against peaceful protesters. Apart from this, we express our condolences to those who have been victimized and affected by this violence.
