Dhaka: In a major development in Bangladesh, the ruling Awami League-led 14-party coalition has decided to ban the fundamentalist organization Jamaat-e-Islami. Along with Jamaat, its student wing Chhatra Shibir will also be banned. Jamaat-e-Islami and Chhatra Shibir are accused of hijacking the student protests in Bangladesh recently and spreading violence, in which more than 200 people were killed. Our partner ET had reported in its report how Jamaat-e-Islami, supported by Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI, had hijacked the movement, which led to violence and arson.
Anti-national history of Jamaat-e-Islami
Earlier, Jamaat was banned from participating in the elections of Bangladesh. The leadership of Jamaat-e-Islami opposed the independence movement of Bangladesh. It supported the Pakistani army in 1971. After a decision of the High Court in October 2018, the Election Commission of Bangladesh cancelled the registration of Jamaat-e-Islami. This decision was taken in a meeting held at the Prime Minister’s residence on Monday night. This meeting was chaired by Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Jamaat spreads violence in student movement
Giving information about the decision outside the residence after the meeting, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said, ‘The alliance has agreed to ban Jamaat-Shibir politics for killing common people and destroying state property by creating various issues and carrying out terrorist attacks.’ During this, 14 party leaders including Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal President Hasanul Haque Inu, Workers Party of Bangladesh President Rashid Khan Menon, Torikat Federation President Syed Najibul Bashar Maizbhandari and Bangladesh Sambabadi Dal General Secretary Dilip Barua were present.
There was a conspiracy to set the country on fire
According to the Dhaka Tribune report, ‘Quder said that BNP and Jamaat are conspiring to create chaos in the country. The alliance of 14 parties has unanimously decided to ban Jamaat-Shibir to eliminate anti-national evil forces for the national interest.’ Workers Party President Rashid Khan Menon said, ‘We have unanimously decided to ban Jamaat-Shibir. It is now the government’s responsibility to implement it.’ Najibul Bashar said, if Jamaat-Shibir is banned, they will not be able to hold press conferences and any political activities in Bangladesh.
