(ANSA) – DHAKA, JULY 22 – More than 500 people, including some opposition leaders, have been arrested so far in the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka, during days of clashes sparked by protests against the controversial law on the hiring of civil servants. The news was announced today by the police, while the death toll has risen to 163. The army chief says that the situation is now “under control” and that “at least 532 people have been arrested for the violence”. Among those arrested are also “some leaders of the BNP”, he added, referring to the opposition, the Bangladesh National Party. “We are suspending the protests for 48 hours”, said Nahid Islam, the leader of Students Against Discrimination, the main organizer of the protests. “We ask that during this period the government lifts the curfew, restores the Internet and stops targeting student protesters”, he added.
