Demand to end reservation in jobs

Student protesters in Bangladesh are demanding an end to quotas in government jobs and have called for a nationwide shutdown following deadly clashes this week. Six people have died and hundreds injured in violent protests. Bangladesh, which has a population of 170 million, has a very high unemployment rate. 30 percent of seats in government jobs in Bangladesh are reserved for fighters who fought in the 1971 independence war, which has caused great anger among the youth and they are demanding its abolition.

Supreme Court will hear the reservation case

The protests in Bangladesh are the first major challenge to the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who won a fourth consecutive term in January in an election boycotted by the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). In an address to the nation on Wednesday, Hasina promised that her government would set up a judicial panel to investigate the deaths after police opened fire and fired tear gas to disperse protesters. She said on August 7 the Supreme Court will hear the government’s appeal against a high court verdict that ordered the restoration of 30% reservation for families of those who fought for independence from Pakistan in 1971. Hasina asked students to be patient until the verdict is out.
