Bangladeshi ex-judge reaches hospital in an attempt to escape to India

(24News) The former Justice of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh, AHM Shamsuddin Chaudhry Manik, was subjected to the worst torture by the public in the premises of the Sylhet court, due to which he has been admitted to the intensive care unit of the hospital in a critical condition.

According to a Bangladeshi media report, hospital sources said that former Justice Shamsuddin Chaudhry Manik was arrested while trying to escape to India from the border area near Sylhet while several cases were registered against him. Shamsuddin has several injuries on his body and was tortured on Saturday.

Sylhet Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Md Sagheer Mian said that the condition of Justice Shamsuddin Manik is critical and he has suffered a lot of internal bleeding. and he is being treated under tight security, according to the doctor, due to torture, he has suffered serious injuries on his organs and has been operated on, the former justice has also suffered serious injuries on other parts of his body and he is Also suffering from high blood pressure, security is being provided by the army and police and security has been tightened around the hospital.

The report stated that earlier, Justice Shamsuddin Manik was brought to the court under tight security and as soon as the prisoners’ van arrived, he was punched and kicked by the public, in which the Bangladesh National Party (BNP) and workers of other political parties were involved. The workers of the political parties threw shoes, eggs and water bottles at the former justice even though he was brought to the court under police protection. Alamgir Hussain ordered former Justice Shamsuddin Manik to be sent back to jail and he was shifted to Sylhet Central Jail under the supervision of army and police.

It should be noted that Justice (R) Shamsuddin Manik was arrested under Section 54 by the police and presented in the court where he was not represented by any lawyer, on the information that the former judge of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh was brought to the court. Workers of political parties started gathering in the court premises in groups and raised slogans demanding their execution.

Sylhet Court Police Inspector Jamshed Alam said that Justice Shamsuddin Chaudhry Manik was arrested under Section 54 and the court sent him to Kanaigat police station. Several cases have been registered under various provisions including murder.

He said that the court has directed that the accused should be provided all the facilities as per the rules of the jail as a former justice. Jamshed Alam said that Justice Shamsuddin informed the court about his physical ailments, has seen and directed to provide medical facility to them as per jail rules.

It may be recalled that the former justice was arrested by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) while fleeing to India through Kanaigat (Dona) in Sylhet, later he was handed over to Kanaigat police.
