The bank accounts of former chairman of Padma Bank and popular name in the financial sector Chowdhury Nafiz Sarafat and press secretary of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, journalist Naemul Islam Khan have been suspended. At the same time, the bank accounts of their wives and children have also been suspended.
On Sunday (August 27), the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU), the financial intelligence department of the central bank, sent this instruction to the various banks and financial institutions of the country to suspend bank accounts.
It has been said that all transactions with these individuals and their businesses will be closed. For the next 30 days, no transactions can be made as such. If necessary, this period of suspending the transaction will be extended.
BFIU’s letter said that relevant provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Rules will apply to this order to suspend transactions. In the letter, the names of Chowdhury Nafiz Sarafat and Naemul Islam Khan and their family members, national identity card information is given. Due to suspension of account they will not be able to withdraw any money from now on.
The BFIU directive further states that banks and financial institutions have been asked to send account-related information or documents such as account opening form, KYC and transaction statement etc. to them within 5 working days from the date of the letter in case of suspension of an account.
