It is evidence that there are fewer and fewer bank branches everywhere. The reasons are multiple and of course digitization – which now allows us to always carry the bank on our mobile – has contributed to this, but it also responds to the great transformation brought about by the banking crash 15 years ago. In this dossier we address this great disappearance – in Catalonia it went from 8,105 branches in 2008 to 2,194 in 2022 – and we will also review the banking concentration process following the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers. We also interview former bank employees who, in addition to the many early retirees, changed jobs, and we focus on what is happening in the villages that have been left without any cash register or bank.
