Bankruptcy proceedings in the Basque Country soared 47.8%, more than the state average

Last year the total number of bankruptcies grew by 47.8% in the Basque Autonomous Community, slightly above the Spanish average (46.3%) and in line with the trend that has been registered at the national level since the year 2016. In total, in the Basque Country the figure rose from 458 to 677, compared to the 27,632 recorded in all of Spain.

The data belongs to the report ‘Effects of the economic crisis on judicial bodies’ prepared by the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ), which also includes a decrease in foreclosures of 23.1%. The figure means going from 657 to 505 procedures, doubling the percentage of the national average (10.5%) and marking the second largest decrease after Navarra, where they fell 28.5%.

The courts also collected a 5.3% decrease in dismissal claims, compared to the 3.1% increase at the national level. The figure represents a drop from 5,285 cases in 2021 to 5,005, while the total in Spain went from 117,293 to 120,935. The decrease in the Basque Autonomous Community is the fourth largest in the State as a whole after those registered in the Balearic Islands (11.9%), Madrid (9.3%) and Aragon (6.5%).
