Within the framework of national celebrations, Guatemala prepares to commemorate the Independence Day on September 15thThis year, the holiday falls on a Sunday, so there will be no official holiday. However, the Superintendency of Banks reported that the Monetary Board has authorized the closure of bank branches on Monday, September 16.

The Monetary Board’s decision comes in a context in which many Guatemalans tend to take advantage of breaks and weekends to carry out banking transactions or use financial services. Therefore, it is important that the population is informed about this provision to avoid setbacks or interruptions in their banking activities.

Banking services during the lockdown

Although physical branches will not be open to the public on Monday 16, the Superintendency of Banks stressed that it is at the discretion of each institution to offer its services that day through special offices or agenciesThis measure has been implemented during previous breaks, allowing customers to carry out urgent transactions or access essential services.

Likewise, it is important to highlight that, in addition to ATMs, some banks in the country maintain service points in supermarkets and shopping centers, which could operate in special schedules during this holiday. However, users are advised to check with their bank the opening hours at these locations before visiting, to avoid any inconvenience.

Recommendations for Users

Since bank branches will not be open on Monday 16, it is recommended that users plan their transactions in advance. Among the transactions that could be affected by the closure are deposits, withdrawals, loan applications, and account inquiries.

Furthermore, although electronic services allow for a wide variety of transactions, it is advisable for users who are not familiar with these platforms to seek advice or carry out their procedures before the holiday to avoid possible inconveniences.

Public sector employees leave

The holiday on September 15 has raised doubts as to whether it would be moved to another day because it is a Sunday. Given the situation, on Monday, September 9, during a press conference, the Secretary of Social Communication of the Presidency, Santiago Palomo, reported that the President of Guatemala Bernardo Arevaloapproved September 16 as a day off for public sector employees. This provision will allow state workers to have a long weekend, prolonging the celebrations for the 203 years of the country’s independenceone day after September 15.

While for the private sector it is stipulated that, since September 15, 2024 falls on a Sunday, the holiday will be enjoyed on that day. This is due to what is established in the Law promoting domestic tourismhe decree 42-2010 and its reform, the Decree 19-2018where this holiday is contemplated among the exceptions to the breaks that will be moved to Monday, in case they occur on a weekday or weekend other than Monday.
