After the appearance in the Alcalá Subastas room in Madrid on June 23 of a painting by Goya, ‘Appearance of the Virgin of Pilar to the apostle Santiago and his disciples’, with a starting price of 2 million euros, which was finally unsold, another religious painting by Goya was auctioned this afternoon.

It is ‘Baptism of Christ’ (ca. 1774), an oil on canvas (45 by 39 centimeters), which has gone on sale at Abalarte Subastas in the capital on July 6. Its starting price: 2.5 million euros. Finally, it was auctioned off at 3,050,000 euros (the starting price plus the corresponding commissions). It was acquired by a private collector. The work was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest
