Former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle expressed their support for Kamala Harris’s presidential candidacy in a one-minute video capturing a private phone conversation between the couple and the current Vice President.

“We called to say that Michelle and I are very proud to support you and will do whatever we can to help you succeed in this election and get into the Oval Office,” Obama said to Harris.

“I am so proud of you. It will be a historic moment,” the former First Lady said to Harris.

Speaking on her mobile phone and smiling, Harris expressed her gratitude for their support and their long friendship. “Thank you both. It means so much,” Harris said.

Harris’s campaign team stated that the video recorded the actual phone call and is not a reenactment.

Harris’s unexpected candidacy against Republican opponent Donald Trump continues to be bolstered by supporters, donors, and political figures, even though it has not yet been a week since President Joe Biden withdrew from the presidential race.

Obama, the first Black president, remains one of the most popular figures in the Democratic Party, despite more than a decade having passed since his last election.

Obama initially refrained from expressing his support, even though Biden—Obama’s former Vice President—presented Harris as his obvious successor. Obama is believed to have wanted to avoid influencing the party’s process for determining the nominee.
