Abu Dhabi: Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) has announced that the third unit of the Baraqah nuclear power plant has started commercial operations.

The new unit will contribute 1400 MW of clean energy to the UAE’s national electricity grid. With this, a total of 4200 MW of electricity is being generated from the three units of the nuclear power plant, officials said.

Inec’s Managing Director and CEO said, “We are proud to be able to start the commercial operations of the third unit of the nuclear power plant in the year of sustainability of the UAE.” Muhammad Ibrahim Al Hammadi clarified. The commercial operations of Unit Two have been achieved within a year. Al Hammadi also said that COP 28 will discuss the need to combat climate change by focusing on available solutions in energy security. The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) has been overseeing all grid-connection activities since it was granted operational approval last June until it is fully ready for commercial operation.

FANR said that the operator Nawah Energy Company has taken all necessary procedures to start the critical phase. Authorities clarified. The UAE believes that Unit Three will play a critical role in providing abundant clean power to the national power grid and reducing carbon emissions. Climate Change Environment Minister Maryam bint Mohammed Al Mehri explained.

UAE A nuclear power plant offers clean electricity to the national grid. Out of the total four units in the nuclear power plant, three are producing clean electricity.

The fuel loading process in the third unit could be completed quickly through the operational experience gained from the previous two units.

It is estimated that Baraqah, the Arab world’s first nuclear power plant, will be able to supply 25 percent of the country’s total electricity needs once it becomes fully operational. Since last December, 80 percent of Abu Dhabi’s clean electricity consumption has been supplied by Barakah.
