More than two hundred objects related to the Barbie doll are on display at London’s Design Museum from July until February 23. You can see, for example, the first iconic doll from 1959, the first black Barbie, a doll in a wheelchair and their dream houses. Barbie: The Exhibition charts the development of the most famous doll in the world.
“I hope that whether you are a fan or a hater of Barbie, you will appreciate her detailed research and design in the exhibition,” said her curator Danielle Thom in an interview.
Visitors can view the first doll from 1959 in a striped black and white swimsuit as well as other models reflecting the evolution of the brand and the times. Among the exhibited exhibits, you will find, for example, the first black Barbie, a doll in a wheelchair or dolls representing various professions, such as a policewoman, scientist, doctor, president or astronaut.
Another part of the exhibition shows the development of Ken, Barbie’s companion, who saw the light of day in 1961. “I hope that visitors will learn how the brand was created and why it has managed to rule the toy market for so many years,” adds Thomová.
Barbie: The Exhibition was created to celebrate the 65th birthday of the Barbie doll. It follows the success of the Margot Robbie-starrer Barbie, which grossed more than $1.4 billion.
