“Barbie” was the highest-grossing film in US theaters this weekend, taking in $155 million.

Second was “Oppenheimer”, with 80.5 million dollars

“Barbie,” directed by fusion of Greta Gerwig, was shown in 4,243 theaters, surpassing “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (and every other Marvel movie this year) as the year’s biggest opening and breaking the record for opening weekend for a film directed by a woman.

Meanwhile, “Oppenheimer,” directed by Christopher Nolan, was shown in 3,610 theaters, making it Nolan’s most successful debut outside of the Batman movies and one of the best debuts for an R-rated biopic.

It is also the first time that a film has earned more than 100 million dollars in premiere and another has earned more than 80 million in premiere in the same weekend. It may be the fourth biggest box office weekend ever, with a total of more than 300 million.

The “Barbenheimer” phenomenon may well have started out as a fun contest between the two films, but as many expected, both benefited in the end.

“Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part I”, despite good reviews and a good opening weekend, fell 64% in its second weekend. Overshadowed by “Barbenheimer” and to be replaced in IMAX by “Oppenheimer,” the film starring Tom Cruise earned 19.5 million, for a domestic total of 118.8 million.

While the audiences for “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” overlapped in some cases, they were generally different. For “Barbie,” 65% of viewers were women, according to PostTrak, and 40% were under the age of 25.

Both “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” had a good score on Rotten Tomatoes (90% and 94% respectively), and an “A” rating on CinemaScore. In addition, they became popular through social networks, with good or bad comments, which caused great publicity for both.
