FC Barcelona will close its TV channel on June 30 to meet financial fair play expectations. 150 people will lose their jobs.

If FC Barcelona is heading towards a Spanish championship title, behind the scenes, it must always count its money. The Catalan press announces that the Barça TV channel will stop broadcasting on June 30. The club will not renew its contract with the telecommunications company Telefónica, which largely managed the channel founded in July 1999.

150 Telefónica employees risk being unemployed. Barca considered taking back full control of Barca TV and integrating these employees into the club, reports Sports world . But that would only have increased its deficit. 14 Barça Studios workers are also affected. The Catalan club could rely on them to maintain its broadcasts through an OTT platform (like Netflix, Disney+, etc.).

Barça’s summer transfer window still looks complex

Barça’s decision to shut down its TV channel comes amid difficulties in coming to terms with Financial Fair Play in Spain. Last summer, he sold part of his TV rights for hundreds of millions of euros. Barça had started the season without registering some of its recruits, including French defender Jules Koundé.

The maneuver concerning TV rights did not please Javier Tebas, president of La Liga. “As of today, Barcelona have no wiggle room in their budget for the upcoming transfer market, said Tebas last March. Barcelona have been involved in questionable behavior which has impacted La Liga and we are acting on it. We decided they couldn’t sign any more players.»
